About Us
Mosswood Farm Store opened July 4th, 2007 in a 1910 cracker
style house next to the museum on Cholokka boulevard in
Micanopy. Our vision was and is to offer earth-friendly useful
items that you can’t find easily anymore. Think clotheslines,
butter churns, grain mills. The store is much like the old
general store where your grandmother might have shopped in her
childhood. You’ll find overalls, aprons and sewing notions, as
well as natural laundry soda and pine tar soap.
We want to make natural, organic and sustainable living
products available to everyone who wants to live a simpler
life and lessen their impact on the environment. Community is
very important to us, so in October of 2007, we started a
Sunday afternoon farmers’ market behind the store. Our goals
were to give local farmers a place to sell their stuff, and
give the people of Micanopy and surrounding areas a place to
buy produce and other locally produced goods. The farmers’
market is 1-5 p.m. every Sunday. In December, we expanded the
store to include Mosswood Kitchen and Bakery—where we bake
organic artisan breads and pastries. As of this writing, we
have pastries available daily, and breads available Friday,
Saturday and Sunday, as well as by special order. A lot of
people ask about our name ‘Mosswood Farm Store’. We consider
the store to be an extension of our farm, Mosswood Farm, which
is located just outside of the Micanopy city limits on Lake
Tuscawilla. Mosswood Farm has been our home for the past 15
years. The farm also serves as headquarters for our daughter,
natural horsemanship trainer and rider Jessica Piazza. Jessica
and her cousin, Adrienne Drennen, train and teach
approximately 20 horses and riders at the farm. With Jessica’s
background in hunters, and Adrienne’s past experience in 3-day
eventing, they bring a variety of disciplines to the ring.
But, whatever they happen to be teaching, their approach is
decidedly ‘natural’. Jessica is a Level 3 graduate of Parelli
Natural Horsemanship—and the Parelli ideals of communication
and harmony between horse and rider are paramount in the
program. Since opening the store, we’ve had the good fortune
to meet a lot of folks, both local and just traveling through.
They’ve all been helpful with feedback and advice about our
products and our mission. As a result, we’re constantly
expanding our vision, as well as our inventory. We now have a
selection of organic foods—grocery items, as well as prepared
foods—organic pet products and a much expanded garden area. We
expect to continue to grow, adding items here and there—as
long as we can stay true to our original vision of natural and
environmentally friendly, and maintain our old timey feel.
Please let us know how you think we’re doing. Morgan |
